WoW Forever Onyxia Attunement Guide: Drakefire Amulet
Earn the Drakefire Amulet for Onyxia's Lair in WoW Forever: Alliance and Horde quest steps, dungeons, group needs, alts and a plan for December 9.
Pre-launch guide. Last checked: November 4, 2026. WoW: Forever launches on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard), and Onyxia's Lair opens on December 9. Every raid member needs the Drakefire Amulet to enter. This guide covers only that attunement. For raid sizes and the other raids, see our Forever raid preparation guide.
Nobody has finished this chain in live Forever yet. The steps come from Blizzard. Lines marked Classic reference describe WoW Classic where Blizzard is silent: check them in-game after launch.
What is known and what is not
- Confirmed by Blizzard: each player earns the amulet through a faction-specific questline, both chains end at General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire, and the amulet only has to be in your inventory (raid overview). Blizzard advises starting early, bringing friends for the elite quests and allowing several high-level dungeon trips.
- Reported: the attunement will not be account-wide, at least at launch (Warcraft Tavern, citing the official Forever podcast).
- Not published: level requirements, which quests are elite, group sizes for the attunement dungeons and whether Upper Blackrock Spire needs a key.
Alliance chain, step by step
Quest names and order are from Blizzard's raid overview. The last column shows the dungeon Blizzard's text places each step in.
| Step | Quest | Where Blizzard sends you | Dungeon |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dragonkin Menace | Helendis Riverhorn, Burning Steppes | No |
| 2 | The True Masters (six quests) | Follow the quest text | Not named |
| 3 | Marshal Windsor | Marshal Maxwell at Morgan's Vigil sends you after Windsor | Blackrock Depths |
| 4 | Abandoned Hope | Back to Maxwell | No |
| 5 | A Crumpled Up Note | Loot the note from enemies, take it to Windsor's cell | Blackrock Depths |
| 6 | A Shred of Hope | Golem Lord Argelmach and General Angerforge | Blackrock Depths |
| 7 | Jail Break! | Help Windsor escape, report to Maxwell | Blackrock Depths |
| 8 | Stormwind Rendezvous | The squire at Stormwind's gates | No |
| 9 | The Great Masquerade | Stormwind, with allies | No |
| 10 | The Dragon's Eye | Highlord Bolvar Fordragon sends you to find help | Not named |
| 11 | Drakefire Amulet | General Drakkisath's blood | Upper Blackrock Spire |
- Plan more than one Blackrock Depths trip. Blizzard's order puts a return to Maxwell between the first Windsor step and the note.
- Classic reference: Windsor's cell. In Classic, a Prison Cell Key from High Interrogator Gerstahn opened it. Warcraft Tavern's Forever Blackrock Depths page still says so, but notes it is based on Classic because the dungeon was not in the beta.
- Classic reference: "The Dragon's Eye". Blizzard has not published who Bolvar sends you to. Classic's chain went to Haleh in Mazthoril, Winterspring, who also gave out the amulet (Warcraft Tavern, Classic guide). Check your quest log after launch.
Horde chain, step by step
| Step | Quest | Where Blizzard sends you | Dungeon |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blood and Thunder | Warlord Goretooth, Kargath, Badlands | No |
| 2 | Warlord's Command | Throughout the lower wing | Lower Blackrock Spire |
| 3 | Report in | Eitrigg in Orgrimmar, then Thrall | No |
| 4 | For the Horde! | Warchief Rend Blackhand's head | Lower Blackrock Spire |
| 5 | What the Wind Carries; The Champion of the Horde | Rexxar in Desolace | No |
| 6 | The Testament of Rexxar | Myranda the Hag, Western Plaguelands | No |
| 7 | Oculus Illusions | Black Dragonspawn Eyes | Not named |
| 8 | Emberstrife | Use the Amulet of Draconic Subversion to find Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh | No |
| 9 | The Test of Skulls (four quests) | Skulls of Scryer, Somnus, Chronalis and Axtroz | Not named |
| 10 | Ascension... | Dull Drakefire Amulet back to Rexxar | No |
| 11 | Blood of the Black Dragon Champion | General Drakkisath | Upper Blackrock Spire |
| 12 | Final turn-in | Rexxar gives the Drakefire Amulet | No |
- Two Lower Blackrock Spire trips. An Orgrimmar visit sits between steps 2 and 4.
- Rend may have moved. Blizzard places "For the Horde!" in Lower Blackrock Spire. In Classic, Rend was in the upper wing, where Warcraft Tavern's Classic-based Forever Blackrock Spire page still lists him. Follow your quest tracker.
- Classic reference: the four drakes. Blizzard does not say where they are. In Classic they were in Winterspring, the Swamp of Sorrows, the Wetlands near Grim Batol and Tanaris near the Caverns of Time (Warcraft Tavern, Classic guide). Forever has changed parts of the world, so read the quest text first.
The dungeons on the route
| Dungeon | Needed by | Levels listed by Warcraft Tavern | Unconfirmed for Forever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blackrock Depths | Alliance, four steps | 52–60 | Group size |
| Lower Blackrock Spire | Horde, two steps | 57–60 | Group size |
| Upper Blackrock Spire | Both, final step | 60 | Group size, entry key |
The ranges come from Warcraft Tavern's Forever dungeon list; its detailed pages for both Blackrock instances are Classic-based because neither was open in the beta. Blizzard calls its nine new dungeons five-player but gives no size for these older ones. Check the group finder.
Classic reference: the upper wing key. In Classic, one player needed the Seal of Ascension, from a Lower Blackrock Spire quest, to open Upper Blackrock Spire (Warcraft Tavern, Classic-based page). Blizzard's Forever post mentions no key. If one still exists, Alliance players may need a Lower Blackrock Spire trip their quest list does not show.
What your group needs
- Same faction, same step. The chains differ, so recruit on your own faction. Before each run, check that everyone holds the quest for it.
- Help outside dungeons. Blizzard's elite-quest warning covers both factions, and Alliance players gather allies for "The Great Masquerade".
- One final run. Both factions finish at Drakkisath. Confirm in-game that everyone on the quest can loot the blood before relying on one kill.
Alts: plan to repeat the chain
If the reported launch rule holds, every character starts from zero.
- Attune the character you plan to raid on first.
- Pair alts with friends on the same step, especially for dungeon quests.
- An alt on the other faction follows a different chain and different dungeons.
Timing before December 9
Launch to unlock is five weeks. This is our suggestion, not a Blizzard timetable.
- While leveling: Use our Forever leveling guide. No starting level is published, so check Helendis Riverhorn or Warlord Goretooth when you reach the Burning Steppes or the Badlands.
- When Blackrock Depths suits your level: Alliance players start the Windsor steps.
- Near level 60: Horde players run Lower Blackrock Spire twice. Both factions then book Upper Blackrock Spire.
- Gear on the way: Each Blackrock run is also a gear chance, though Forever loot tables are unverified. Blizzard advises fire resistance for Onyxia but gives no number. See the pre-raid gear service or, if a character is far from 60, the level boost.
- First week of December: List who is level 60 and who holds the amulet.
Getting help with Onyxia's Lair
HideBoost offers Onyxia's Lair runs for WoW Forever. Every raid member still needs the amulet, so contact support to check requirements, availability and timing before December 9. Specific item drops are not guaranteed. Our WoW Forever page lists other Forever services.
Blizzard prohibits buying or selling in-game services for real money, and involved accounts may be penalized. Account sharing also violates Blizzard's rules. Consider those risks and review Blizzard's policy information before purchasing a third-party service.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Drakefire Amulet account-wide in WoW Forever?
Warcraft Tavern reports it is not, at least at launch. Plan for each character to earn its own.
Does the amulet have to be equipped?
No. Blizzard says it must be in your inventory. Don't sell it: Blizzard has not said how a lost amulet is replaced.
Do Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit need attunement?
Blizzard's overview describes none. Warcraft Tavern reports the developers said neither has an attunement chain, while hinting at extra steps for the full experience. Recheck before December 9.
Can I follow a Classic attunement guide?
As background only. Blizzard's Forever steps already appear to differ in places, such as where Rend is fought. Follow your Forever quest log.
